As part of the connection that the Rotary Club of Belconnen has with the University of Canberra, we have donated the 'Welcome to Country' artwork that can be found outside the Ngunnawal Centre on Pantowara Street on the university campus. As is so often the case when undertaking a project, the delivery took longer than expected but we were pleased to have the formal unveiling of the artwork to the University of Canberra on Monday 3rd July 2023 during NAIDOC Week.

The Rotary Club of Belconnen was able to fund this artwork through the funds raised from stall holders and visitors to the Trash and Treasure Market Jamison.

The artwork speaks volumes about the deep-rooted traditions and the unity of the Ngunnawal people. The central circles, adorned in light ochre, symbolize the ceremonial ochre used in Ngunnawal country. As we move outward, the light green circles represent the coming together of communities across the limestone plains. Furthermore, the artwork incorporates U shapes, which symbolize the Elders of the Ngunnawal community, extending their welcoming arms to people from all walks of life. The smaller U shapes reflect those invited to Ngunnawal Country.

This artwork serves as a powerful reminder of the need for us to foster an inclusive and respectful environment within our university community. It reminds us that we are privileged to be part of this rich tapestry of knowledge, where diverse perspectives and experiences intersect. It calls upon us to cherish and learn from the traditional custodians of this land and to forge meaningful connections that transcend cultural boundaries.
