Serving the Community Since 1971
The Rotary Club of Canberra-Belconnen was chartered with 20 members, on 11 February 1971.
The Club's major source of fund raising is its weekly Trash 'n' Treasure Market held at the Jamison Centre car park since 1974. This project has raised well over $5 million to date, which has been dispersed on domestic and international community service projects such as Emergency Accommodation at the Calvary Hospital and at The Canberra Hospital, as well as many other large and smaller projects throughout the region and in neighbouring countries.
Operating the Market these days requires seven Club members for about six hours each Sunday (6:45am to 12:30pm), plus people behind the scenes cleaning up the area after each market and maintaining the equipment. Operation of the market facilitates fundraising not only for the Rotary Club of Belconnen but also for other clubs in the area that assist Belconnen on a weekly basis. The Rotary Club of Belconnen provides strong support to The Rotary Foundation and has donated more than US$110,000 to it at the same time recognising many members and others for their community work.
The Rotary Club of Belconnen strives to achieve a balance in its community service, caring for the aged, supporting youth and needy people in the community.
