Service in Our Club
The Rotary Club of Belconnen has been involved with many international initiatives and projects and with other Rotary Clubs around the World.
International: Latest News
Our club has recently become involved in two new projects (for us), both involving our near neighbours to the north-west.
Rotary Small Grants: Nusa Tegarra Timur (East Indonesia)
The first is through a Rotary Small Grants (through RAWCS) in the Nusa Tegarra Timur (NTT) province of East Indonesia. The aim is the "Alleviation of Poverty, Provision of Water and Sanitation, Supporting Agriculture and Education, through Self-Help". The people are our closest neighbours with NTT's nearest island only 450km from Darwin.
RC Belconnen are bringing together several Rotary, Rotaract and Interact clubs in District 9710 to reach an initial annual target of $10,000 which will enable 100 projects - water tanks, sanitation blocks, irrigation, crop fencing and school furniture over the next three years. It is a relatively small amount of funds for major impact.
RC Belconnen has committed to provide project coordination with NTA and an annual donation of $2,000 for the next three years. Narrabundah Interact Club (which is school based) has committed $1,000 a year for three years.
RC Canberra Burley Griffin donated $2,000 last Thursday, so over half of this year's target has now been raised.

Rotary Overseas Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC): East Timor
Our club has recently sponsored a small child (Illinda) and mother (Anita) from East Timor. The infant recently underwent life changing surgery at the Women and Childrens' Hospital in Garran. All went well though the child remained in hospital for a few extra days as the result of fever.
Illandia is a delightful cherub who does not seem fazed by all the attention she is receiving. Anita is shy, she has no English, and only speaks Tetum. She does not read or write. She is one courageous mum who is experiencing so many new and strange things, all for the love and health of her child.
